BOOK REVIEW: THE SUN AND HER FLOWERS
after the rain
joy will reveal itself
after sorrow.". -Rupi Kaur
THE SUN AND HER FLOWERS is a poetry book by Rupi Kaur. It came after "Milk and Money" the New York Bestselling book. It was published in 2017.
This book is continuing the themes of the writer with the same poetic style. l loved her style because she went into depth.
Her poetry digging harder into a reader's inside, let him/her feel with the flow of feelings, every stanza has its own joy to offer.
"Sometimes
I stop myself from
saying the words out loud
as if leaving my mouth too often
might wear them down
- I love you"
This book was different for me from the previous book, Milk and Honey.
It has themes such as sadness, self-abandonment, love, second chance, honoring the roots, migration, motherhood, nationalism, sex, liberty, self-empowerment, and last breaking with healing at the same time and so on.
l never thought before that only a few stanzas could break me and made me suffer. But this book shatters all my inside world. Sometimes, l was smiling while reading some lines, other times l was feeling wounded and broken into a hundred tiny pieces.
Whatever Rupi Kaur wrote in her book is only written from her heart. It is like she placed her heart in front of the readers. Readers can feel, think and sense it by reading and relating it with their life.
"The irony of loneliness is we all feel it at the same time
-together"
Her art and photography are also appreciatable. Even the paintings with each stanza and poem reflecting the meaning of poetry in the right way and make it more adorable.
This book is also split into five chapters.
1. Wilting 2. Falling 3. Rooting 4. Rising
and 5. Blooming.
I am not going to explain each chapter but to present an overall view of this book.
The Sun and her flowers have revolutionary, feminine themes as well. But the theme that touched my heart was Falling, grief and loss, and trauma.
"what is stronger
than the human heart
which shatters over and over
and still lives."
l can feel how it goes with people, those who faced such harsh things in life, that's why it is also close to my heart.
This second book of Rupi Kaur didn't heal me the way the first book did. Milk and Honey work for me in the best way possible.
It was a fascinating poetry book but l can't deny that it refreshed one's pain and double the suffering.
"to heal
you have to
get to the root
of the wound
and kiss it all the way up."
Rupi's style of writing l love most as she never leaves her readers only in pain but she makes them realize how worth they are, teaches them self-love, and tries to heal them as well.
"when death
takes my hand
I will hold you with the other
and promise to find you
in every lifetime."
I might not good at explaining how l feel while reading this poetry book, but it was a different experience. I cried, smiled, happy and sad feelings parallel going all the way till the end.
"I do not weep
because I'm unhappy
I weep because I have everything
yet I'm unhappy."
Read this book because every person has it's own journey experience while reading any kind of book. Maybe this journey let you feel and learn some interesting things. So go and try for yourself.
